Angela Buckland

Born 1962. Lives and works in Durban, South Africa.

Buckland is an established freelance commercial and editorial photographer. She is equally well-known for her personal work with numerous awards, solo exhibitions and participation in group exhibitions nationally and internationally. In her personal work she likes to reject rules and instead challenges herself with self-imposed constraints; such as the four frames she gave herself for The Sleep Series and the one minute and single frame she allowed herself for each bed in Block A Jacobs Hostel which is made up of 561 images.

Early on in her career she was keen to observed, responded and commented on the outer world; but the realities of becoming a mother has turned her gaze inwards. She is now more interested in the private histories of seemingly ordinary people and the ways in which they interact with friends, lovers, families and strangers. She now seeks out moments that explore the human need for connection and a sense of belonging. She engages intuitively with her subject, seeking an emotional veracity rather than an objective truth.

For the past seven years Buckland has been working on the theme of “rites of passage”, examining diverse young voices negotiating the fragile years between childhood and adulthood, and in particular what this means in contemporary South Africa. To that end she has been documenting three viewpoints: a group of multicultural, urban teenagers including her own daughter; a rural perspective negotiating gender inequality, agency and resilience and thirdly a group of Xhosa Initiates in the Eastern Cape.
