Jan Neethling

Born 1938, lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa

Neethling studied art (under the tutelage of the late Robert Hodgins) in Pretoria during the 1950’s. He had his first two-person exhibition with Hodgins in 1976. Neethling refers to photographic images (most often his own photography) as source material for his work. Neethling deconstructs the human figure, and presents the viewer with distortions, which he exaggerates in his layered paintings.

ERDMANNCONTEMPORARY hosted the first solo exhibition by this talented painter in November 2008. His exhibition showcased a wide variety of work including portraits, landscapes, still-lives and nudes. Neethling’s next solo exhibition will be hosted at this gallery during 2012.
