Johann Louw
born 1965, lives and works in Piketberg, outside Cape Town
Louw’s oil paintings are executed with economy of colour and tone. Usually Untitled, they explore anonymous figures in a muted pallet. Increasingly, Louw tends to abstraction as he grapples with the threatening domain of psychological and political menace and intrigue. This is all the more frightening in the absence of specified time and place.
Louw’s recent work sees the broadening of his metaphoric use of images, to include scenes derived from the austere landscape of the central Karoo.
