Manfred Zylla

born 1939, lives and works in Cape Town and Germany

Multi-talented and well-known anti-apartheid artist, Manfred Zylla has been active in the South African art world since 1970. In 2006 he was nominated for a Sasol Wax Art Award and was selected as one of the top 10 nominees.

Zylla works in a wide range of media including painting, drawing and woodcuts. He sees himself as a social commentator and uses his art as a tool to demonstrate and illustrate shortcomings and inequalities within his society, be that Germany or South Africa. Zylla participated in the 10th Havana Biennale in Cuba 2009.

Zylla’s long awaited solo exhibition will open at this gallery on 11 August. A selection of recent and new works will be presented at Centro Luigi Di Sarro, in Rome, Italy from 11 October - 30 November. His traveling museum retrospective, 50 Years of Making Art, will open in South Africa during 2011.
